Jamie Locke is best known for her intricate hand-carved mandalas on wood, metal, glass and leather. A self-taught artist, Jamie is adept at taking a vision and turning it into reality. Her strength is in her hunger for creating, and exploring different methods and mediums, always bearing in mind that in the creative process the vision sometimes evolves into something completely unexpected. “For me, the process of creating a mandala is always one of inspired revelation, elemental surprise, and pure bliss.”

Whether she is carving, drawing or painting, her desire is to always breathe positivity into the world and hopes that her creations will inspire, encourage and uplift. Jamie predominantly works creating one of a kind commission works.

Jamie welcomes visitors to her studio by appointment. Please contact jamie@jamielockeart.com to schedule a time to stop in.

Artist Statement

As a self-taught artist and maker in many mediums, I discovered a love for creating mandalas in 2007, inspired by the traditional Indian art form of mehndi and mehndi designs. Over the years, my work has evolved from creating henna designs on skin and then ink on paper, to carving intricate designs onto wood, metal, glass and stone using a handheld rotary tool. I love to explore new mediums and you will often hear me proclaim that there’s not much I wouldn’t attempt to carve or etch!

What began as an exploration in 2007 turned into a full-time career in 2014. Over the last 7 years, my work has found its place in homes all around the world. This continues to be a work that inspires & thrills me and it brings great joy to see carved mandalas in homes, offices and galleries far and wide.

My work can also be found around Indianapolis through a series of public art projects such as The Harmony Mural, partnering with The Department of Public Words, featuring my mandala designs along the Monon Trail and most recently, #IndyAngelWings, a collaborative mural project with artist Megan Jefferson and Indy Mural Fest. I am proud to have collaborated with partners such as Emmy Award Winning Salt Project, Platform Beer, Dremel, SunKing Brewery, Indiana Pacers, Monon Skate Co., Bohall Design, Indy Parks Foundation, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Indianapolis Arts Council and Breckenridge Brewery.

My ultimate goal as an artist to continue to create art that uplifts and inspires those who purchase or come into contact with my work while making a living doing so. I want to continue to develop ideas of how to bring my work into public spaces through murals and installations, especially through collaborations with other artists.

One of my greatest joys in creating is to mentor and nurture creative growth in others and to assist their creativity through positive feedback and uplifting statements that focus on the best aspects of their creations through teaching classes using the skills I’ve acquired over the years.
